BEWARE 'FAKENEWS' AND 'CLICKBAIT' ARE HERE - TALK AND EDUCATE YOUR PATIENTS AND COLLEAGUES!!

Dear All,
Beware, ‘Fakenews’ and ‘Clickbait’ in medicine and healthcare – they are both here – courtesy of HIFA reda on:

‘[hifa] Br J Urol: Fake news and clickbait – natural enemies of evidence-based medicine

Below are extracts from a Comment in the British Journal of Urology. Full text is freely available here:

'Did you hear about the latest breakthrough, offering a potential cancer cure? What about the new clinical trial leading to better outcomes for an incurable problem? Or even the scandal regarding hitherto inappropriate treatment requiring a new approach to a medical condition? If you answered yes to any of the above, the chances are you have been ‘click baited’.

'... fake news represents fictitious information designed to mislead the reader into believing the established credibility of the source, to then benefit the promoter via ‘clickbait’.

'Clickbait is a derogatory term describing web content that is designed to generate revenue...

'This concept already is being exploited in contemporary medical practice, where every patient has access to the internet, but few have the insight to correctly interpret results of medical research...

'In the current age of fake news and clickbait, we have an obligation to educate patients, where required, as to the relative merits of these concepts of headline-promoted medical research... Like most things in life, if fake news in medicine sounds too good to be true – it probably is.'’
